try from the ME Computer to another and then from the other computer to 98. I had a similiar problem between to 98 computers and the problem ended up being that I forgot to turn on file and print sharing on the new computer. Check EVERY setting with another computer that would be set up the same way. Check your TCP/IP and make sure the computer name is not used somewhere else on the LAN. As for the subnet mask it's right underneath the IP Address. It should be the same for all computer's on your LAN.
Another thing you could try is to take the cable from a computer that is seen on the LAN and move it over to the ME computer (this would troubleshoot a bad port on a hub, and the cable).
