Theoretically it should not affect the performance but in reality, the fact that there are an extra 8 bits of width and density puts additional load on the clock and will slow down the clock edges, thus limiting the overclockability of the memory.

Otherwise there should be no performance difference, just like you said. In an ECC capable system, though, the bandwidth drops to about 40% compared to a non-ECC system.
