i appreciate the responses but i'm not sure you're not confusing the amount of memory the system will recognize with the maximum amount of memory the cache can manage before it becomes inoperative. for example the intel tx chipset with a 512k cache could manage 64 mb of ram although the system could recognize two gigabytes of ram. The point is that if the amount of memory exceeded 64 megabytes the computer would work but slower by about 25 percent because in effect there would be no cache hits. the old rule was that 512k of cache could manage 64 megabytes of ram and the athlon thunderbird has only 384k of cache (128 L1 and 256 L2). Are we on the same page? i'm not an expert by any means but i really want to get a right understanding of this issue. so not to be a pain but i am willing to go the extra mile to get some level of understanding of this issue. thanks. bye, roy
