To make a good speaker, you have to know about 20 parameters of the cones you use. Then you will have to calculate the volume of the box, absorption ( ->thickness of the box material, sort of the material ), shape of the box can be determined and many other things.... You can be lucky by just randomly sticking something together, but mostly it'll be far away from good.

by working after a few thumb rules you can get good results with not much calculating....
