You see, that's the problem. I use my computer to listen to music and play games but also to do some serious work. Being a poor student, I don't have a television (gasp!!). Instead of getting one, I thought that I should invest the money into getting a decent set of speakers (my 2.1's are OK, but I could do a lot better ) and a tv card + DVD drive. Personally I feel that sound quality has a greater impact on the movie experience than picture quality and size (to a certain extent... a 12'' monitor wouldn't do). There's something about a nice deep rumble that really has a profound effect on me. So, with this in mind I would really like a nice 5.1 system.

However, I'm having a hard time figuring this out. You see, maybe I should keep work and play separate. When I think about the situation, it seems a bit silly to sit back on a couch, watching the Matrix with this great sound setup, but looking at a computer screen! I should probably just get a tv and normal sterio system, and keep my computer in a separate room for work stuff (and games). But then the sound would suck and besides, I mostly listen to the mass of MP3's that I have gathered over the years.

Ideally, I would have two separate speaker systems. One for my comp, and the other for entertainment purposes. Also, I would want them to be connected in such a way that I could listen to MP3's and DVD's from my computer in the living room. But that would involve more cash than I would have in the near future.

What do you think about using the pc as home stereo/theatre?

Hugh
