I am not sure if I believe that guess just because what MicroSoft did to DOS for the Hard Drives they added forcing of the second HD to D:. Now it is stupid as the beggining of the second HD is near the begining of the boot drive if you have partitions.

It was common pratice to have 2 floppy drives as there was no temp file to make copies back then, I even had a 4 drive controller with its own bios that forced itself to D:, E: if you had only one HD or forced itself to F:, G: with a second HD.
