Sometimes spurious(random) errors occur simply from timing errors in memory. If the error has the right combo of data, then you end up with divide by zero errors or similar problems that end up in processor freeze. Also check your heatsink on your athlon, or if you have Mother Board Monitor check the temps of your processor and your system. High temps will cause sudden lock-ups. Below is a link to Motherboard monitor - not sure if it will run in 2000, but you can check.
