You shouldn't be trying to "get the printer port to be a com port"
A printer port (LPT#) is a "parallel" port ... usually a 25db female connector.
A com port (COM#) is a "serial" port ... either 9db or 25db female/male connector.
Typically you have one parallel port and two serial ports on your computers.

Since you mention "com port" , it sounds like you want to make a "serial" connection
between the 486 and the other computer. You are going to have to identify which serial
port your are using and use the correct patch cable...
