I have decided that the problem lies in my soundcard. after removing it and playing through the DVD, it would not lock up on me at all, apparently windows 2000 lies when it says it installs compatible drivers from its online update db, so for win2k, dont go with the mx300. so i am not on my way out to comp usa to pick up a sblive value edition or something else cheap that actually is SUPPORTED by win2k.
