An IDE RAID controller works like a SCSI adapter for the purpose of booting. If there are no hard drives on the built-in IDE channels, then the system should go right to the RAID card to boot. If there is a hard drive on the normal IDE controller, you will have to go into the BIOS and put "SCSI" before "C" in the entry that controls boot order.

As for speed, the 2 5400 RPM drives striped in a RAID array might be a bit faster than a single 7200 RPM drive.
