If you can't make the Highpoint absolutely invisible to the system on every level, I'd recommend just using it (barring any problems with it). If it's going to take up resources, you might as well put it to work.

Or, depending on how many drives you have, maybe use both. For instance, I have a RAID setup on my FT66, a hard drive on each ATA100 channel on the A7V, and a DVD and CDRW drive on the Via ATA66 channels. Every device is a master on its own channel. Just remember that the FT66 (and I think the Highpoint) only supports hard drives.
