Try using the "SAVE AS" function under "FILE". It should come up with a directory file save window and under the filename line you should see a "SAVE AS TYPE" with a small scroll window. As long as who ever installed Office 97 added the convert files option it should work. If however it is damaged enough the student may have to still manually fix whatever is still messed up.
