I setup a new Compaq Duron 700 for a friend over the xmas break.
WinME was preinstalled by Compaq and I noticed they did something that made the system run very fast and stable. They had 2 partitions on the 20GB HD. A 17GB (main partition) and a 3GB partition just for ME's restore/backup files...which took up 1.5GB of the partition!!!
You could try reloading ME and setting up a seperate partition for its restore files?
Personnally, I dumped ME after 4 weeks and bought Win2k pro...very happy with it.
