You should've increased the mem latency, instead of directly lowering the mem speed. I had a v770 plain vanilla (150mhz/125mhz), but was able to overclock to a whopping 200mhz/160mhz (without a fan) simply through a bios flash which upped the ram latency and resulted in much better overclockability.
