Take a look to SystemControl->MultiMedia->Extended
and then select AudioDevices.
Check all the Settings, maybe is something curious.
Other thing:
start C:\programs\directx\setup\DxDiag.exe
then look under Sound/Music/More Help, maybe you could find something there.
Else: install windows media player again.
