Try going to system tools, click system configuration, then open tools and find the system configuration utility. Go to windows startup and disable everything. Restart you system and see if it hangs during shutdown/startup. If it doesn't you can go back to the tools and start enabling them back one by one until you find the culprit. It could also a combination of programs too. If it still does it it could be an OS or hardware problem, and we'll need more info.
